La Saffo di Franz Grillparzer: il malheur d’être poétesse

La Sappho di Grillparzer è stata inserita a ragione dalla critica all'interno della tradizione del Künstlerdrama, tuttavia, di rado la tragedia dell’artista Saffo è stata considerata da una prospettiva di genere. Il contributo propone un close-reading del dramma e ne individua le principali fonti ponendo al centro dell'analisi la questione dell’inconciliabilità tra l’identità di donna e quella di artista al fine di mostrare come Grillparzer intese portare in scena non il dramma di un Künstler, ma la tragedia di una Künstlerin, non il malheur dêtre poète ma il malheur d’être poétesse, rappresentando il destino di una donna che avrebbe potuto affermarsi ed essere riconosciuta come tale nella società solo rinnegando la sua missione poetica ed “educazione estetica”.

Grillparzer’s Sappho has rightly been placed by the critics within the Künstlerdrama tradition, however, the tragedy of the artist Sappho has rarely been considered from a gender perspective. The article proposes a close-reading of the drama and identifies its main sources, placing at the centre of the analysis the question of the irreconcilability between the identity of a woman and that of an artist in order to show how Grillparzer intended to stage not the drama of a Künstler but the tragedy of a Künstlerin, not the malheur dêtre poète but the malheur d'être poétesse, portraying the fate of a woman who could only assert herself and be recognised as such in the society by denying her poetic mission and ‘aesthetic education’.
