Il gioco nella tragedia: Die Jüdin von Toledo di Franz Grillparzer

Il saggio esplora il ruolo del gioco, inteso come Spiel (gioco e recita) in Die Jüdin von Toledo di Franz Grillparzer, dove la passione di Alfonso per Rachele, una giovane ebrea, scuote l’equilibrio del regno. Grillparzer attinge innanzitutto dalla tradizione teatrale barocca del theatrum mundi, ma recupera anche un senso ancora più antico del gioco come fisicità, presenza corporea, eccesso di energia, movimento irrefrenabile.  Rachele diventa così simbolo dell’energia vitale, incarnando l’infanzia e l’autenticità che Alfonso non ha mai vissuto. Inoltre, l’attenzione ai molteplici significati del gioco mette in luce i meccanismi più profondi del potere.

The essay explores the role of the play, understood as Spiel (game and performance), in Franz Grillparzer’s Die Jüdin von Toledo, where Alphons’ passion for Rahel, a young Jewish woman, shakes the equilibrium of the kingdom. Grillparzer draws primarily from the baroque theatrical tradition of theatrum mundi, but also recovers an even more ancient sense of play as physicality, bodily presence, excess energy, and unrestrained movement. Rahel thus becomes a symbol of vital energy, embodying the childhood and authenticity that Alphons has never experienced. Moreover, the focus on the multiple meanings of play highlights the deeper mechanisms of power.
