Abstract

Hegel’s Elements of the Philosophy of Right represents the philosophical space in which the rationality of free will is determined. In particular, Hegel inaugurates a new line of enquiry in the constellation of modern political philosophy showing the centrality of freedom for moderns while at the same time pointing out the dependence on what the ancients called ethos. A concept he takes up and transforms into the notion of ethical life (Sittlichkeit). In this regard, the essay deals with the relationship of trust (Zutrauen) between individuals and ethical institutions, and how this gives rise to a special form of recognition, the political one.
