La (quasi) preghiera di un agnostico

Questo saggio analizza minutamente una poesia (“For Eleanor and Bill Monahan”) di William Carlos Williams, pubblicata nel 1984, in cui il poeta mostra la sua vicinanza (con alcuni distinguo) al Cattolicesimo dell’amata madre, benché la religione della sua infanzia fosse quella del padre, l’Unitarianismo, e benché con questo rito egli sia stato sepolto nel 1963.

This essay presents a close reading of a poem (“For Eleanor and Bill Monahan”) by William Carlos Williams, published in 1984, that shows his closeness (with some caveats) to Catholicism, the religion of his beloved mother, even if the religion in which he brought in as a child was that of his father, Unitarianism, and even if he was buried according to the Unitarian service.
